The Many Ways Your Smart Phone Can Track Where You Are

Smart phones offer users some amazing applications these days. Most of which are really useful in their own way. A smart phone is more than just a simple mobile phone, in fact it’s a mini computer that everybody carries around with them at all times. It allows them to keep in contact with other people like never before.

One of the apps that smartphones now have is being able to pinpoint the location of it’s user. Now in general, this is a very positive thing and one which most people embrace even though they are not aware of which of these location technologies are passive or active. The more authorised apps a person has on their smart phones, the less control they have on these location technologies.

Avi Greengart of Current Analysis believes the first stage of cellphone location is already well established. The second stage goes far beyond this to include mapping and directions as well as social and other apps. But he also believes a third stage will bring apps about some that no one has even thought of. Now this could have many benefits but it could have it’s downsides too. Particularly worrying is the fact that it would involved a users’ privacy, physical safety from stalkers or indeed arrest from the authorities looking for them, as was stated by Seth Schoen, a senior staff technologist at the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

The link at the end of the article goes into far more detail of how the 10 ways a smart phone can be used to trace person and the technologies used in each one of them giving the limitations of each app as well as the strengths.

To Date It’s An Accepted Application

Most of the world has accepted location-based services. They’ve not considered the ramifications of services providers giving out information about their whereabouts to others who are looking for them. This includes situations where lawsuits are being processed or information being stolen by hackers who gain access to it from app vendors. Many experts think because this is all happening so quickly, people haven’t had the time to think about the situation and where it could lead to.

To date there are around 10 different systems that are either already in use or being developed which could be used to identify a person’s location. A lot of the time a few of these are used in combination so when one of the apps is less effective the other one kicks in to keep track of a person’s location. Below are the 10 apps mentioned above:

1 . Global Positioning System (GPS)

Developed by US Dept of Defence in the late nineties, it is the best-known location outdoor tracker around. Cellphones pick up three signals from three different satellites and pinpoint a persons location. If the cellphone picks up 4 signals, it will tell a person’s elevation too. Works well in open areas.

2.  Assisted GPS

Faster than GPS, assisted GPS sends data over a cellular or Wi-Fi network instead of having to download data from satellites after having established a satellite link.

3.  Synthetic GPS

Synthetic GPS is able to forecast satellites locations days and weeks in advance which enables phones to identify it’s whereabouts in seconds.

4.  Cell ID

All cellphones need to find three satellites no matter how fast they happen to be. Cell ID is a technology that identifies which cell a person is using and how far they are from neighbouring cells. This enables carriers to locate a cellphone by way of a database of base-station identification numbers and locations. It is very precise in urban areas.

5.  Wi-Fi

There are 2 ways Wi-Fi is used to pinpoint a persons location. Most common is RSSI (received signal strength indication). It identifies the signals of a phone and detects access points and then refers to a database of Wi-Fi networks.  The other Wi-Fi location technique is wireless fingerprinting and uses profiles of known places based on the pattern of Wi-Fi signals found in these locations.

6.  Inertial sensors

Inertial sensors work in areas where no wireless signals can be found. They keep track of a person’s location based on other inputs. Smart phones have three inertial sensors, a compass, an accelerometer and a gyroscope and these determine a person’s location without the use of external inputs but only for a limited time.

7.  Barometer

A barometer determines elevation and smart phones have a chip that detects barometer pressure, air is lighter the higher a person happens to be.

8.  Ultrasonic

Ultrasonic apps in smart phones determines where a person is every time they enter a shop or store that has Shopkick technology installed.

9. Bluetooth beacons

Bluetooth beacons will provide very precise location information via smart phones with Bluetooth  4.0 apps.

10. Terrestrial transmitters

A technology that’s being developed to overcome GPS’ limitations using stationary transmitters that will be more reliable than satellites.

Conclusion

With so many ways of determining a person’s location via their smart phones it’s easy to see how this may be of benefit in certain situations. However, the other side of the coin is that nobody who uses a cell phone will be able to stay untraced and therefore could be more vulnerable to stalkers or hackers who get hold of their information from apps vendors. It is something that people need to take time out to think about. The only control they’ll ever have over the situation is to limit the amount of apps they authorise on their smart phones and as more apps are being developed and installed into their phones, this is very unlikely to happen.

The James Bond Gadget in Your Pocket

Most people who enjoy James Bond flicks have a bit of envy when it comes to the clever spying tools-of-the trade, which Bond always has at his command, courtesy of the Secret Service techno-magician called Q.

Gadgets that seemed like far-fetched science fiction a few years ago are now in the pockets and purses of nearly every adult— in the form of a “smart” cell phone, and among the capabilities of your phone, you may be surprised to learn that spying on another person’s text messages is a function you can perform yourself.

Common Uses of Text Message Spyware

It didn’t take the show “Cheaters” to make people realize that not every marriage is a partnership of loyalty and trust.

It probably won’t come as a surprise to learn that one of the most common usages of cell phone spy tools involve checking up on family members.

That said, spouses aren’t the only people of whom you might feel a need to keep track.

Consider the possibilities:

  • Checking on a cheating spouse
  • Tracking a troublesome teenager
  • Tracking a traveler’s safety
  • Monitoring interactions with an abuser or subject of a protection order
  • Creating legal records for a divorce or custody case
  • Uncovering unapproved use of mobile apps
  • Ensuring the safety of minors in cell-phone interactions
  • Locating a runaway
  • Recording photos and videos taken by a phone to document illicit activities
  • Determine whether a family member is contacting drug suppliers or forbidden contacts

How Cell Phone Spying Works

It is entirely legal to intercepting text messages, GPS information, screen-views of smart phones, records of phone conversations, and even photos and videos taken by the monitored phone: legitimate software programs can be downloaded to accomplish the task.

Regardless of what type of phone you use yourself–Blackberry, Android, iPhone, or any other model–and regardless of what type of phone you wish to monitor, there is a software program that can do the job for you.

From the privacy of your own computer, you can intercept the phone usage of absolutely any phone number, without being detected by the person or persons whom you feel a need to monitor.

Even deleted records will be available to you–which are important, as those records which another party tries to hide may be the very interactions you have interest in.

Despite rumors and urban myths to the contrary, this type of spying software is not a form of hacking and is not illegal in its own right. Only if you use the software for an activity that is, in itself, illegal, would you be in danger of running afoul of the law.

It wasn’t that long ago that a concerned citizen needing information would have to pay exorbitant fees to hire a private investigator, whose gathered information would likely be circumstantial at best. Today you can become a “double-oh” agent yourself, with this spying software.

Cellphone has spyware

Signs That Your Cellphone Has Spyware

Do you have that sneaky feeling that there is something wrong with your cellphone? Does it act weird all of a sudden for no apparent reason? If you answer to both those questions is “yes” then you might have a spyware problem. As cellphones get a lot more sophisticated, hackers also get more aggressive in their attacks, more malicious than ever before. Before you become the next victim you should know the early signs of a cellphone spyware infection, so you can do something before it too late.

Here are the most common warning signs that your cellphone has gotten infected by cell phone spying software:

  1. Strange new icons that you cannot get rid of – The most common sign that you have a spyware problem is when you suddenly get a couple of new icons in your home screen even though you did not remember installing any new apps or games.
  2. Cell phone batter lifeBattery Drain – If you notice that your battery does not last as long as it is supposed to then you have a spyware problem. The reason why your battery gets drained quickly is because hidden applications are running in the background, this constant activity uses up a lot of your battery’s charge.
  3. Phone Keeps Shutting Down or Resetting All by Itself – If the spyware gets into your phone’s firmware (this is basically the phone’s operating system), it will usually mess up the programming. Oftentimes the spyware will cause applications to run a lot slower than normal, and in extreme cases it will cause the cellphone to shut down even if you do not press the power button.
  4. phone billYour Monthly Cellphone Bill Suddenly Increased – Spyware often uses your cellphone’s data connections. Even if you do not use your phone to surf the internet, if spyware found a way into your smartphone it will cause it to connect to the internet even if you do not want to. If you notice that the data connection or gprs connection icons suddenly turned on, this is caused by spyware infiltrating your smartphone’s firmware.

These signs of spyware in your cellphone is not the only problem, you may also become a victim of identity theft. As its name suggests, spyware will get all of your personal information from your cellphone and send it to a hacker who will then use it for unscrupulous acts; which is why you need to protect your cellphone at all times so that you will not become the next victim.

Protect Yourself!

Spyware does not get into your phone if someone did not put it there, so you should always keep your phone with you at all times. Sometimes, you’re the one that installs the spyware, albeit unintentionally; do not open any email attachments from people you do not know, because once you open them the spyware will automatically install itself in your smartphone. If you find that your cellphone has been infected with a spyware of some sort, you should immediately take out the sim card from the phone and take it to a certified technician.
